This past weekend in Las Vegas, the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor mega fight officially concluded. Inside of the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mayweather overcame a slow start before breaking McGregor down for a 10th round TKO, as seen on SHOWTIME pay per view.
The Mayweather-McGregor matchup captured the public?s attention for several weeks, but now the boxing world can return its focus to what is possibly the best single fight to make in the sport, with lineal middleweight champion Gennady ?GGG? Golovkin facing off with Mexican superstar and former two-division world champion Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez. Golovkin vs. Canelo goes down on Sep. 16 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. On HBO pay per view and thus far the two camps have been respectful towards one another, for the most part, aside from banter here and there.
Speaking recently on Beto Duran?s Staredown, Golovkin?s trainer Abel Sanchez and Canelo?s trainer Eddy Reynoso broke down the match.
?This fight is huge for Mexico. There hasn?t been a fight like this since [Manny] Pacquiao vs. [Juan Manuel] Marquez that has peaked such interest,? Reynoso noted.
Alvarez is one of the biggest stars to emerge from Mexico in recent times and with the match taking place on Mexican Independence Day, the contest itself is surely huge. One thing Reynoso does admit, is just how formidable of a foe Golovkin will be. The Kazakhstan champion has a wealth of championship experience in the amateurs and pros, and will go down as one of Canelo?s toughest foes to date.
?Canelo and Gennady?s boxing styles will certainly test each other, and this is the type of fight that can result in a trilogy. This fight will bring boxing the credibility it once had in the past. The boxer that makes the best adjustments is the one that will win the fight,? said Reynoso.
The hard work continues for Canelo, with the fight just a few weeks away.
?We are working hard in the gym. We know Golovkin is a strong boxer, but Saul is a better boxer, and his time is now,? Reynoso said.
This fight marks the first time that Golovkin (37-0, 33 KO?s) will fight in Las Vegas, and Sanchez admits the importance of that statistic.
?All the big fights are in Vegas. Gennady has never had a fight of this magnitude. This is a fight for world supremacy. The middleweight division has always been the glory division so the winner of this fight will be considered a super star,? Sanchez said.
Golovkin trains inside of Sanchez?s Summit Gym in Big Bear, California, and years back he actually sparred a few rounds with Saul, who was very young at the time. The word around boxing circles was that Golovkin got the better of the sparring, yet Sanchez recognizes how much Canelo has improved since then.
?Sparring is sparring. Canelo was just a young boy of 19 or 20 years when he and Gennady sparred. He?s progressed immensely since then. My impression of Canelo after that sparring session was that he was fast and smart, had nice combinations and good movement, but he was only five years into his professional career at that time. I thought he could be a champion or a star someday,? said Sanchez.
And even though the respect is obvious, Sanchez believes that Golovkin must find a way to break Alvarez down come Sep. 16.
?Gennady needs to beat Canelo. He needs to destroy Canelo; destroy the aura that he has right now,? said Sanchez.
Sounds like we have a shootout on our hands, and that?s a good thing for the sport.
