Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar de la Hoya, who is the promoter of Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs), expects a very tough contest next Saturday night.
Canelo will challenge IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
For Canelo, it will be his first contest at the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds. Canelo had previously held the WBC middleweight crown at 160, but never fought beyond the catch-weight of 155-pounds as champion.
Golovkin knocked out 23 opponents in a row, until he was forced to go the full twelve round distance with Daniel Jacobs in March. Canelo was in the ring back in May, when he moved all the way up to 164.5-pounds and dominated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. over twelve rounds for a one-sided decision victory.
De La Hoya believes Golovkin will fight in the same manner that he always does – seek and destroy.
That’s why he doesn’t want Canelo to get overconfident in the contest.
“Golovkin is a monster, a machine, he is unstoppable. When he hits it’s as if he had dynamite in his fists. He can take a punch, he always comes forward, he does not take a step back, he always wants to give a drama show. His plan will be to knock Canelo out, with that same old strategy – to move forward, to never back off and throw punches from the beginning .We are going to see an explosion in the ring on September 16,” De La Hoya told ESPN Deportes.
“Canelo’s confidence is in its highest place, but that is dangerous for a young boxer like Canelo. He has to be confident and self-assured, but cautious because on the other side he has a great boxer who is feeling the same emotions that he feels… strong, confident, as if no one can stop him.”
