THE Ashes will not be the only sporting rivalry between Australia and England this summer with Jeff Horn set to announce his next opponent in the coming days.
Horn?s trainer Glenn Rushton hinted that The Hornet?s WBO welterweight championship title defence would take place against Englishmen Gary Corcoran in Brisbane, less than a month after the opening test of the 2017 Ashes series in the River City.
Former schoolteacher Horn will defend the championship he claimed in a thrilling contest against Manny Pacquiao in the Battle of Brisbane on July 2.
?The terms have been agreed upon and it will be in Brisbane. We?re still sorting out a location and a date, and then it?s just a matter of the signatures,? Rushton said.
?I?ve been told by the promoters that it?s a done deal. We?re hoping to announce it in the next few days.
?I?ve heard that before and then nothing?s happened but I think it should go ahead without any hiccups.
?It will be sometime between December 2 and 16.?
Rushton was coy about the venue.
?We?ve got a number of indoor and outdoor locations in mind,? he said.
?We?re looking to do something unique and hopefully it comes off that way.?
A rematch between former schoolteacher Horn and eight-time division world champion Pacquiao was mooted but never materialised.
However, Corcoran ? the WBO?s No. 10-ranked welterweight fighter ? will present Horn with plenty of challenges of his own.
?He?s a tough guy with a good record,? Rushton said.
?He?s got a high-action, high-volume style, so it should be a good fight.
?Jeff is keen to know what date it will be held, because you can?t really get into your preparation fully until you know what date you?re fighting on.?
