Geno’s Boxing Mailbag: Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather JR Edition, Part II

Now that we have all had time to digest the fight that the world awaited for, I hope that all the people with the contention that Oscar De La Hoya should have won have come to their senses. I watched the fight again and it wasn’t any more exciting, and it didn’t change my mind either. Floyd Mayweather, JR., fought a smart fight in the sense that he didn’t take any chances and got the victory, but he did not do his career any favors by taking this route. He needs De La Hoya. I don’t believe that he could sell a pay per view by himself, or against an opponent that isn’t a big name. This is why Floyd was so kissy-kissy on the HBO after fight interview during the re-broadcast. There was no more “golden girl” comments or imitations of De La Hoya…he was just screaming for a rematch. This is what I call “Lennox Lewis Syndrome.”

Lennox Lewis Syndrome is when you beat somebody up and then try to get them into a rematch so you can do it again. Remember his bout with Mike Tyson? Well, let me refresh your memory. Lewis nearly killed Tyson in the ring, knocking him flat in a one-sided performance. After the bout, Lewis tried to enforce a rematch clause and when Tyson said that he didn’t want to do it, “The Lion” was angry. He wanted to beat up Iron Mike again! That’s not right. What’s the point of beating up a guy twice? I don’t hear Wladimir Klitschko demanding a rematch with Ray Austin. “I didn’t beat him to a pulp enough!” If anyone has a right to demand a rematch with an opponent that he clearly defeated, it’s Wlad. That naked guy with a hammer that he brings to fights needs work. When Wlad retires, what’s a naked guy with a hammer to do? So, Klitschko-Austin makes all the sense in the world to me. Mayweather-De La Hoya II, or Lewis-Tyson II do not make any sense.

I got a mattress set from a furniture place and after they delivered it, the mover asked to use my phone. I allowed it, but I wasn’t going to let him be alone. I’m not paying 4.99 a minute…I think that those love lines still exist. Anyway, he handed the phone over to me and the woman on the line said: “How was it?” What in the @#$@# did this man tell this woman that we did? Jeez… what kind of delivery was this?! It turned out to be just questions about my satisfaction with the delivery itself. I told her “the guy was good,” and she said “I bet he was.” No, wait… she didn’t say that. I forget most of the mattress conversation but it was strange. When I got my couch, I didn’t talk to anyone. Why is it only beds? Next time that I will buy a mattress, I will ask the salesman: “Are you going to call me? Are you going to harass me? If you want to talk about bouncy beds, get it out of your system now, buddy!”

Okay, onto the hate mail and the love mail and the I want to talk about your mattress mail.

Geno,

This is the woman that spoke to you about your mattress. How do you like it?

Mattress woman

Okay, I made that one up…. Onto the legit mail. Hey if every other website can fabricate emails, aren’t I allowed one?

MORE DE LA HOYA-FLOYD STUFF

Geno,

Who are these people that think Oscar beat Floyd? I read a recent article that said the boxing scoring system should be changed because of the decision. I don’t get it. Floyd wasn’t as effective as he could have been, but Oscar did nothing. He pressed forward and got picked apart by a naturally smaller man. I think the fact that Oscar did better than expected is fooling people into thinking that winning three rounds and losing nine is enough to win a fight. It’s not. And for everyone who complaining about how boring the fight was, I suggest you go watch Felony Fights on youtube. Boxing is a sport, and just because two fighters don’t kill each other doesn’t mean that the fight wasn’t interesting from a tactical perspective.

Raj

Raj,

You know boxing, and I’m not just saying that because we share the same opinion. Okay, that’s part of it. You said a mouthful, as my boyscout leader used to say. Oscar did better than anticipated, but he did not win the fight, and Floyd could have stopped him but chose not to. What is with these De La Hoya lovers that can’t see what happened in the ring? I did check out the felony fights that you recommended, and you make a great point. This and the UFC and tough man contests appeal to much of today’s audience. They want blood and somebody getting beaten to a pulp and will not tolerate an exhibition of skill much of the time.

Hi Geno,

My random thoughts of “The World Awaited for nothing”.

I have DLH win by two rounds over PBF. PBF won rounds 8 to 12

PBF is 90% defensive. Not fan friendly. Not a boxer worth remembering from an average fan. Imagine a fight if we have two PBFs. I think they can stand with each other inside the ring for 20 rounds. Just looking on each other.

Anyway, just my own thought in my own point of view.

Regards,

Dan

Dan,

I remember when Mike Tyson said that he wanted to fight Mike Tyson while he was in his prime. A prime Tyson vs. a prime Tyson would be great. A prime Floyd vs. a prime Floyd would be horrible. Why did you even bring that up?

Now the world did await for something. The hype of the event, the way that the world tuned in, and the fact that boxing was back in the limelight if even for a fraction of a second.

Floyd is creating a different sort of legacy. His last few years of activity have been opportunism and good business as opposed to fighting the people that he should be fighting to prove his position. Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams, Miguel Cotto, and Kermit Cintron would be great fights for Floyd…instead of bouts with Carlos Baldomir and De La Hoya. Floyd is a good fighter…not an all time great from where I’m sitting.

Hey, Geno.

Know what? I could understand why most of the boxing experts who watched the fight live had Mayweather winning the fight hands down. Mayweather’s punches are very fast so much so that they don’t actually the punch when it lands but they could hear the smacking sound out loud. But know what, the sound that they hear is actually not Mayweather’s gloves landing on de la Hoya but de la Hoya’s gloves blocking Mayweather’s shots. I understand that most of you boxing experts have only seen the fight once and came to your conclusion. But know what, I watched the fight live via PPV with my friends, and we scored the fight 115-113 for de la Hoya, but we could settle for a draw.

There is no way in hell that Mayweather won that one. I have rewatched the tape many times, and it only reinforced my conviction that Oscar should have won that fight. The difference between watching the fight live and watching it via PPV is that when you see it live you see the fight from one angle only, whereas when you view it via PPV the cameras follow the action from the most vantage position around the ring. Watch the fight again, Geno, and better still turn off the sound, and then please don’t be shy to admit that you were wrong in this one. I am not a huge de la Hoya fan, but i believe De la Hoya should have won the fight. Just look at the expression on Mayweather’s face before he was announced the winner. That should tell you he did not win this one. Effective punches? Oscar did not look as though he had been in a fight, but Mayweather’s face tell it all. As for your contention that Floyd could have knocked Oscar out if he wanted, that’s giving too much credit to Floyd’s pitty-pat punches. He hit Oscar squarely on the chin a few times, but those did not even make Oscar take a backward step. He could not hurt de la Hoya even if he wanted to and that’s the truth.

Archermac

Archermac,

Trust me, Floyd could have KO’d De La Hoya if he wasn’t so safety first. And one of the shots, in the 4th round I think, stunned De La Hoya and that’s the truth! What is it with people putting “and that’s the truth” or “that’s a fact” which is basically the equivalent of “end of discussion.” I hate the crap. I’m the one that ends discussions!

Floyd’s punches are not pitty pat. He is not a Hector Camacho. He has good power, not great, and it would stop a lot of fighters, including De La Hoya. And I did watch this fight again and it did not change my mind and shutting off the sound only helps my stance. Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant are the co-presidents of the De La Hoya fan club.

Geno,

I am not pro De La Hoya, i went for trinidad and mosley during their clashes with him, but now i favored him against mayweather because i thought he can make PBF kiss the canvass. He tried, but to no avail, PBF opted to cover and run. I feld glad when Preety Boy Floyd Runner announced his retirement on the post fight, at least the boxing will be an exiting sport again. Mayweather is a talented boxer, but sorry to say he does not bring exitement to the sport.

Franz

Franz,

I agree that he does not bring excitement to the game…not a lot anyway, but he could. Have him fight a bull like Miguel Cotto or an activity fighter like Paul Williams and we should have some fun.

Geno,

im a boxing fan from philippines. i like your column.

i guess they both (PBF & Oscat) won on that day. pretty boy floyd won the belt and the boxing match plus a million dollar bucks. oscar won mostly the money (25M dollars + PPV share)???????

have you seen the smile on oscar’s face when the result was announced? i guess it has a lot of meaning on that ‘smile’… what u think about it?

technically Floyd has a God given talent in boxing, but the problem my friend geno, fans don’t like him & i don’t know why, maybe because he don’t usually go for KO. but i really appreciate his skills in boxing.

for oscar, i like him as well. he’s a legend, he’s a fighter out there, but he’s no match in terms of skills. i guess he’s past, he’s a legend, he should concentrate as a businessman now.

josh

Josh,

Floyd is very talented, and people do not like him because he has this street side to him, but it is all bogus. He’s lying with dogs however and he’s getting fleas. Roger Mayweather is a complete idiot and when I say complete, I mean 100%, without a shadow of a doubt, cannot be disputed, idiot to the millionth degree. You can only lose IQ points when you hang out with him. I would love to see Roger Mayweather on Jeopardy. I would be surprised if he could figure out the buzzer.

Oscar was smiling because the hard part was over. Now all he had to do was to drive over to the bank, deposit his check for 10 kazillion dollars and go home and sing to his wife. Wow, did you see her cry when he brought over that band and cake for her birthday? Perhaps she was truly touched or she was upset because she was expecting a real band, like the Village People, and Oscar brought those rejects.

Geno,

hello there …what a fight it should be if only the boasful guy i have ever known in boxing the guy who told to be pretty but as ugly as the duckling in the story…scared this guy..no balls..running should be his sport..come he might be added to the worlds fastest guy on earth…hahhaha…surpassing world records in the olympics…boastful, arrogant guy guys do not ever try to idolize uglyfloyd coz he does not even look pretty…i hate him..thats all…i will never ever put him in the books or history of boxing much better not to know this guy around the planet…thanks guys..;.

Jonathan

Jonathan,

OK… I think that I understand brother. Floyd-no balls-ugly-fast-not pretty-arrogant. Gotcha.

Geno,

I do not, for the life or me, see how you managed to post those letters saying De La Hoya won the fight. I guess that is to be expected on a site where 40something % of the people voted De La Hoya by KO.

Geno there are just some people out there that will stick up for there guy no matter how bad he is beaten. I saw this coming before the fight. Short of PBF killing the Golden Shower…I mean boy…there would be people saying this or that about the fight.

For those of you who think Floyd ran and Oscar won the fight, let me explain to you how scoring actually works. Guys don’t win rounds because the fans in the crowd from the same country as the fighter go “oooh” and “ahhhhh” like the smurfs everytime he throws an 8 punch combination that hits gloves and air. You don’t win a round by throwing more punches. If that were the case I would sign Geno up right now and have him stand in the middle of the ring punching air and then running away. You certainly don’t win rounds by a flurry with 10 seconds left in each round…that was exposed 20 years ago in the Hagler-Leanord fight.

You win rounds by landing a high % of punches. By making the other guy miss. By landing the more effective shots. Look at the punch count…PBF landed more power shots than De La Hoya landed punches. Now I can see where you idiots and loving De La Hoya fans would be confused. If it was my favorite fighter I might convince myself he won that fight too. However, Floyd won that fight. Proof should be the fact that it was in Vegas, Golden Boy had the better odds(that is for making money if you bet it), and he was the promoter. So you tell me who would get unfair judging in the fight. Come on people think before you speak.

Finally I would just like to THANK ALL YOU IDIOTS, GOLDEN BOY LOVERS, AND PEOPLE WHO NOTHING ABOUT THE SPORT FOR BETTING ON DE LA HOYA. YOU MADE THE ODDS GO FROM 220-100 TO 140-100 BEFORE THE FIGHT WENT OFF. ALL THAT EXTRA CASH IS FUNDING MY ATLANTIC CITY TRIP NEXT MONTH FOR THE BRIGGS FIGHT. THANK YOU IDIOTS THANK YOU!!!!

JR

JR,

That wasn’t very nice. First, screw the smurfs. I prefer the snorks. Remember them? They lived underwater and had things growing out of their heads…disturbing things, really.

When De La Hoya fights, his HUGE fan base will contend that he won regardless, especially when you figure in the hatred that many have for Floyd. Shane Mosley beat Oscar in the rematch. It wasn’t controversial, but Jim Lampley nearly jumped out of his seat when the decision was announced and Oscar fans demand that he was screwed.

I can do more than stand in the middle of the ring, throw punches at the air, and then run around the ring… come on JR! I can do more than that. I can punch the mother @#$@# right in the grapes too. Write that in there somewhere and I will do it…Andrew Golota style.

Geno,

This is the way i saw the fight. With all due respect, i beg to disagree with you. I scored the bout 116-112. I think Mayweather landed the cleaner shots because he done it in the middle of the ring and one at a time, only few are from combinations… but golden boy from what i saw landed more and i also think that they were also clean although it looked not clean because that was a barrage of punches and most of them were thorwn at Mayweather’s body which when we saw in the slow-mo was landing clean… Adding to a point that he was the aggressive fighter…

Why are the rules in judging different if with each judges?

Most of the controversial boxing results, their reason why the other wins is because they were the aggressor and they are the champion…. why was it not applied in this bout. I’m not a Dela Hoya fan i’m a PacMan fan… i said who ever wins convincingly i am for the winner the way i see it Mayweather has the edge i saw that a 60-40 game for Mayweather but the way i saw it Mayweather didn’t do enough to get the belt and become a world champion again.

Jay

Jay,

It’s that argument that you have to take the belt from the champion and I don’t subscribe to it. I think that the winner is the winner, belt or no belt on the line. I think that you answered your own question. Aggression is one thing, but it is the affective aggression is the key. Floyd was the affective aggressor and that’s what counted.

Geno,

This is a little late butI hope you can spare some of your time. I believe Oscar won by a small margin but I wouldn’t call the verdict highway robbery, just simple theft. I have two issues, one with those who believe PBF won and the second with those who favor Oscar. First, the PBF guys denigrate the punches Oscar landed. Because a lot, ok lets be honest, MOST of the Dela Hoya punches did not land on the head, the target that is most visible to fans and judges alike, the PBF guys ignore those which DID land, either on the head or on the body. Because SO MANY of PBF’s punches landed, they ignore that PBF’s punches were actually fewer than Oscar’s so that, on the balance and PUNCH STATS aside, Oscar APPEARS to have landed more scoring punches.

On the other hand, the Dela Hoya guys, as most fans, tend to score a fight as a whole, their verdict based on their impressions and recollections they gather at match’s end. That is why they say Oscar won because he was busier (true up to round 7 or 8) more aggressive and “controlled” the pace and the conduct of the fight. Judges, unfortunately score for every round and do not sum up their impression after the fight. So that at times, a tiny edge that a sympathetic viewer might give to his fighter at any given round might be inconsequential to a judge at ringside who might then give the nod to the fighter with the most number of clearly won rounds. What adds to the confusion is that, because of the same round by round scoring, the same tiny edge which a fan might ignore, will be scored by the ringside judge, negating the few lopsided rounds won by the viewer’s fighter.

Thanks,

Al

Al,

I have some time to spare. I think that Oscar did land some shots to the body that weren’t much. Oscar was really ineffective and Floyd didn’t dazzle me either, but he won with pinpoint punches… Oscar did his best, just about, but it wasn’t enough.

And you make a valid point. The Oscar fan would give rounds to “The Golden Boy” if it is remotely close, and that is where the problem is.

hi Geno!

How are you? I wonder why manny people cant accept that PBF won the fight? Why they dont just give credit to PBF’s style of boxing. I am a pilipino, honestly almost all pinoy that watched the fight cant accept the judge’s decision. I think the main reason why they hate PBF is that they are expecting PBF to fight like manny pacquiao. And that ain’t gonna happen because PBF’s is best in his own style. Can you share your opinion about this? Thanks and more power,Godbless

Angelo

Hi Angelo!

I’m good…you know…hanging in there brother. People do not accept the decision because their man did not win the fight and they wanted him to REALLY badly. There is only one Manny Pacquiao and Floyd has to fight his own style. He doesn’t have to be so safety first, but it is hard to argue with success. What’s good for the fans may not be good for Floyd and Floyd cares about himself more than anyone else.

NOT DE LA HOYA-MAYWEATHER RELATED

Geno,

We all know boxing’s governing bodies are for the most part a joke. The heavyweight division is the worst offender. I asked this same question a year ago and now sadly the same question can still be asked and I will even add on a follow up. How can none of the 4 heavyweight champions be ranked in the top 15 in any of the other sanctioning bodies besides the one they hold the belt in? My follow up: how can Lamon Brewster who wasn’t ranked with the IBF when he was CHAMPION of the WBO, all of a sudden be ranked in the top 5 and get a title shot against Klitschko when all he has done since being champ is lose once and not fight for a year. I haven’t fought in a year maybe I should be in the IBF’ top 10. To take that one step further Klitschko was ranked in all 4 top 10’s a year ago before he won the belt, now miraculously he is not ranked with any other belt.

I know the answer to this. Green, money, loot, cash. I think more people such as yourself need to consistantly pound these websites exposing this garbage. God knows HBO and Showtime aren’t going to make an issue of it. I get so frustrated with this. I actually tried to find an email address for Marian Muhammad the IBF president and oddly enough it wasn’t listed on the IBF site. Nor anywhere else I can find. If I can get online and email Geno with no problem you would think talking to this person would be easy. You just look at their top 15 rankings and it is laughable, and as far as I am concerned that means they are laughing at us the fans. I wish someone like Ring magazine who does have some cred with their top 10’s would come up with the loot to become the real deal as far as champions go. Joe Louis must be rolling in his grave.

Final note. How good can “Dr. Steel hammer” feel about being champion when he doesn’t defend against anyone. He always talks about fighting anyone and wanting to unify the belts. Let’s see it. As far as I am concerned he is babied and to be honest I cannot believe he would take this fight against Lamon Brewster. All risk no reward really. Maybe he was so busy dodging Shannon Briggs that he forgot Brewster KO’D him the F out last time. Big “Sigh”.

Alright Geno your turn to go nuts.

Jon

Jon,

You’re bad-mouthing Wlad? Are you crazy? Do you want hate mail too? Yeah, the sanctioning bodies are a complete joke and Wlad is protected. Now this Brewster fight is the first time that Wlad is attempting to avenge a defeat and the timing could not be better. Brewster is coming off of a defeat, may be an old man stepping into the ring after his wars with Sergei Liakhovich and Luan Krasniqi. If Wlad can beat Brewster, it’s now. The fight is in Germany, Brewster is coming off of loss and a layoff, and Wlad has been active and impressive.

Brewster gets the title shot because HBO and Team Klitschko wants him to get it. When Brewster gets stunned, and he will, the ref will stop the fight. Wlad is a 90% favorite to avenge this loss UNJUSTLY. This situation stinks. Brewster better run at him and throw caution to the wind and take out the bias referee while you’re at it. Get ready to be pissed off. This smells like a set up from go.

By the way, Ring Magazine is a joke for the most part too. They have had their issues with manipulation of the rankings in the past too.

Okay people, thanks for the questions and comments. Take care one and all and I will talk to you later.
