LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Floyd Mayweather’s split decision over Oscar de la Hoya on Saturday grossed 120 million dollars making it the richest fight in history, an American cable television network announced Wednesday.
The World Boxing Council super welterweight showdown in Las Vegas also attracted a record 2.15 million pay-per-view buys, the New York based-Home Box Office said.
The revenue from Saturday’s superfight surpassed the previous record of 112 million dollars from heavyweights Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis fight in 2002.
The previous record for buys for a non-heavyweight bout was 1.4 million for De la Hoya against Felix Trinidad in 1999.
Saturday’s bout eclipsed the overall record of 1.99 million buys set in 1997 for the second meeting between Tyson and Evander Holyfield.
The Mayweather-De la Hoya audience was made up of 1.225 million buys from cable systems and 925,000 buys from satellite homes throughout the United States.
