Emanuel Steward has likened Floyd Mayweather Jr to Sugar Ray Leonard ahead of his superfight with Oscar De La Hoya here on Saturday night.
Steward was the trainer and mastermind who helped Lennox Lewis dominate the heavyweight division.
And he was also in the corner when legendary Thomas ‘Hitman’ Hearns fought the likes of Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran in the superfights of the 1980’s.
Steward says despite the unbelievable hype this fight doesn’t have the same electricity that bouts like Leonard/Hearns I generated back in 1981.
But despite that he says HBO’s acclaimed 24/7 series has transformed De La Hoya/Mayweather into “a major happening.”
Steward knows what underdog De La Hoya has to do to win here in the MGM Grand on Saturday night – he’s just not sure it’ll happen.
