LAS VEGAS — Concerned about Floyd Mayweather’s personality gap early in his career, boxing promoter Bob Arum enlisted the help of two other notable figures in the sport, Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya, who knew something about the value of a quick wit, quick smile and quick jab.
All were returning from the Boxing Hall of Fame inductions in upstate New York. Arum had helped make Leonard and De La Hoya into arguably the two biggest non-heavyweight attractions in history. He wanted them to tell Mayweather the formula.
De La Hoya wasn’t particularly fond of the idea.
