The only thing as fast as Floyd Mayweather’s hands is his mouth, which was talking non-stop during yesterday’s final news conference before he faces Oscar De La Hoya on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden.
Of course that wasn’t unexpected considering Mayweather is almost as good at boasting about his own exploits as he is at beating up opponents. But it wasn’t just talk yesterday.
His eyes flooded with passion and defiance as he gazed into the sea of cameras and notebooks and declared judgment day was at hand – the day he’ll be judged as not just the best boxer on the planet but one of the best of all time.
“I want my daughter and my kids and my grandkids to be able to hold their head high and say, ‘My father and my grandfather was the best fighter to ever put on a pair of gloves,’ ” Mayweather said. “The best fighter ever is Floyd Mayweather, and I’m going to guarantee you victory.”
There is no option other than victory for Mayweather, because he has the most to lose in this fight. It is a must win.
