Kell Brook has admitted fears that he could take a ‘fatal’ punch following his broken eye socket made him take a knee against Errol Spence last night.
The Sheffield fighter lost his homecoming fight to the American when the bout was stopped in the 11th round at Bramall Lane.
Brook had suffered a broken eye socket for the second time in as many fights following his defeat to Gennady Golovkin and he admits he was left with no choice but to throw in the towel in his hometown.
“They kept me in hospital until about three in the morning,” he told Sky Sports News on Sunday morning. “I had a CT scan on my eye and the eye’s broken again, it felt the same as the Golovkin one, so I need surgery again. Devasted.”
Brook revaled that he suffered the injury on the seventh round, but kept on fighting.
“I knew from round seven that the eye had gone and it progressed as the fight went on,” he comtinued. “I tried to get through it but kept getting double vision and then it would come back into line but in the 10th and 11th round it stuck there and that’s why I went down on one knee.”
The 31-year-old admitted that the damage he suffered in Golovkin bout played on his mind.
“I remember the surgeon saying last time after the Golovkin fight I could have gone blind if I’d had one more round so I had that in my mind.
“I had to stop. Pride was leading the way but when I got caught in the 11th and it wouldn’t come back into line. He was coming on strong and I knew he is a very sharp shooter, a very good fighter and I knew it could be fatal with some of the shots he was chucking in so I went down on one knee.
“I tried to get the eye back in line but it wouldn’t and I knew the fight was over.”
Brook also played tribute to the capacity crowd at Bramall Lane.
“I?m devastated to lose in my home town,” he comtinued.
