Oscar & Floyd stagger in last round of hype

It has been called “The Super Bowl of Boxing.” Referred to as “The Fight of the Century.” Heralded as the match that could save the sport, and has the auspicious title of “The World Awaits.”

Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. came together at the final press conference at the Hollywood Theater at MGM Grand yesterday to put an exclamation point on 12 weeks of hype for their 12-round WBC junior middleweight title match on HBO Pay-Per-View Saturday night.

Maybe they were finally overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the event, exhausted from training or tired of talking about it, but De La Hoya and Mayweather were much more subdued than they have been when in the same room over the past three months. De La Hoya (38-4, 30 KOs) sounded like he was nursing a cold, and Mayweather (37-0, 24 KOs) seemed like he wished yesterday were Saturday night. They saved their best barbs for the individual sessions. And as usual Mayweather landed the best verbal shots against De La Hoya.
