Nietes keeps AsPac crown

DONNIE “The Snake Charmer” Nietes did not frustrate his hometown crowd the other day after he scored a knockout win over challenger Thongthailek Por Vorasing of Bangkok, Thailand to keep his WBO Asia-Pacific minimumweight title at the New Victorias City Coliseum in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.

Nietes’ victory came inside the 1:10 mark of the second round.

Nietes, a native of Murcia, Negros Occidental, was all business at the start as he toyed with the shorter opponent in the opening round.

Thongthailek, however, gamely engaged Nietes in an exchange of fists until a solid right landed on his jaw that sent his to the canvass for good.

Crown

RP No.1 contender Mark Jason Milleguen, for his part, captured the Philippine super lightweight crown after pulling a technical knockout win over No.6 contender Christopher Saluday, four seconds into the seventh round.

Melliguen’s win, though, wasn’t served on a silver platter as he had to undergo a tough time against Saluday before taking home the title.

Despite of a first-round knockdown, Saluday kept on pressing on the taller Melliguen as their exchange of punches continued unabated all thoughout the match prior.

Melliguen’s superior strength and longer reach, though, proved to be too much for Saluday, who was knocked down with a combination of straight punches early in the seventh.

Saluday managed to beat the count but he was met with another flurry of punches that floored him for the second time.

Melliguen tried to finish off his groggy opponent but the move almost boomeranged on him as Saluday was able to return the favor and almost dropped the Bacolod City-native former SEA Game silver medalist Melliguen.

However, lady luck smiled on the weary Melliguen as his left hook landed squarely on the chin of Saluday that knocked down the latter for the third and last time.

The referee stopped the contest inside the 2:56 mark of the seventh round due to the three knockdown rule applied by the Games and Amusement Board.

Promising woman fighter Gretchen Abaniel also displayed her ring savvy as she toyed with Jessica Oyang before pulling a TKO win at the 1:20 mark of the second round. Gerald Nietes, on the other hand, debuted with a TKO win at the 2:35 of the third round over Tata Galendez, while former Philippine team member Warlito Pare?as scored a TKO win at the 1:59 of the second round over Jerome Bontog in his professional debut.

Mark Gil Melliguen, for his part, pulled a unanimous decision win over Markyll Taroja, while the other winners are Jun Intor over Romnick Rampista, Franklin Albia over Marjo Borres and Reman Salim over Rico Genon.

Meanwhile, in Binangonan, Rizal, former Pan-Asian Boxing Association (Paba) light flyweight champion Marvin “Leyte Bomber” Tampos, failed to win the Philippine super flyweight title after losing to Eden Sonsona by technical decision in the 10th round.
