David Haye was taken swiftly to hospital for emergency examination of his suspected achilles tendon injury.
The injury he endured in his protracted defeat at the fists of arch rival Tony Bellew left him unable to attend the usual post-fight press conferences at the O2.
Haye’s long-term future will clearly depend on whether the injury which he left him handicapped after the early rounds can be repaired at the age of 36.
He had flown to Munich in the middle of fight week for treatment which he hoped would prevent the collapse of his right leg on Saturday night.
Haye had been to see a specialist sports doctor just four days prior to the blockbuster fight with Bellew – but the fighter insisted he would be fit for the heavyweight showdown.
The 36-year-old travelled to see Hans Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt – whom Haye labelled ‘the world’s No 1 sports doctor’
Muller-Wohlfahrt helped with Haye’s rehabilitation in 2013 after he was forced to pull out of his domestic bust-up with Tyson Fury with a career-threatening shoulder injury.
According to reports circulating after the Bellew bout, Haye is set to have surgery on the damaged achilles.
