Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Conor McGregor up against each other is going to happen – and is getting closer than people might be thinking of. That is as far as recent pronouncements of the McGregor and Mayweather camps are involved. Their proposed fight which has already been floating for a couple of months already is not a sold out one. Mayweather having spent the better part of his life in a boxing ring, and McGregor in an octagon, causes the fans of the combat sports to be out of phase, most of them hurl criticism on what others believe as a potential massive combat sporting event.
Floyd Mayweather Jr., 40, and Conor McGregor, 28, being combatants coming from two different sports, the contests is seen by many as a form of disrespect to both sports. And because the fight, possibly to be held at the T-Mobile Arena sometime in September, is to be staged as a pure boxing match then it is being equated as a sure win for Mayweather, who is foremost in the department of defence. Conor McGregor, himself a combat sport superstar but in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), for all his greatness in the octagon is likely to to be reduced to the ordinary in a match against a pure boxer, leave alone against Mayweather, in the squared ring. The embedded inclination – in both body and mind – of Conor McGregor to perform in a fight according to the rules of MMA will most likely result to his demise. Advertisement
Despite the crippling disadvantage that McGregor is seen to undergo, not everybody is convinced he is going to lose with almost a hundred percent certainty. The president of UFC himself, who at first was against the idea of the math-up, is a recent and most prominent convert who does not write-off McGregor at once. Dana White argues McGregor is capable of shocking the world, ending Mayweather’s 19-year undefeated run that saw him winning five different world championships in five different weight divisions.
True, the Irish ruler of the octagon possesses the so-called puncher’s chance but whether it is going to find the target remains to be seen. A closer look however at Mayweather’s fight data, it would reveal the probability of McGregor hitting Mayweather with a fight-ending punch is arguably slim. On the flip side, in order to justify the validity of their much-talked match-up as competitive and an exciting one at that, the possibility of Mayweather, a native of Grand Rapids Michigan, USA, intentionally exposing himself to carefully selected McGregor punches to land can be one which is real. Pun intended but the idea can be true.
