City officials jubilant over Pacquiao victory

CITY Mayor Celso Lobregat and District I congressional aspirant Beng Climaco on Sunday joined the entire nation in greeting Manny Pacquiao for winning the WBC Super Featherweight Championship bout by technical knockout in eight rounds in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

Lobregat and Climaco along with Cong. Erbie Fabian and members of the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) party watched the fight live on wide screen at the Don Pablo gym in Sta. Maria together with supporter-barangay officials.

“Like the LDP, he delivered a knockout punch”, Lobregat stated. “It’s not only the victory of Manny Pacquiao, it is the victory of the Filipino people.”

He said Pacquiao, a world boxing champion, has proven to the whole world that the Filipino can and the Filipino will hurdle any struggle.

“Congratulations Pacquiao and may he concentrate on his boxing career,” Lobregat said in reference to Pacquiao’s bid in Congress in the second district of General Santos.

Like the mayor, Vice Mayor Climaco said Pacquiao’s victory is the victory of the Filipino people.

“May we also be inspired to fight forward especially now in the campaign,” the lady congressional aspirant for District I hoped.

Reflecting on her life, she said, Pacquiao’s fight gives her inspiration to fight the best fight that she can in order to win for the people.

Pacquiao stopped Jorge Solis with a powerful right hand in the eighth round after struggling through the opening five rounds and being cut by a head butt in the sixth.

The barangay officials who attended the assembly earlier called by Mayor Lobregat and his LDP team were also very ecstatic with the fight.

They were one in saying that Pacquiao made them proud to be Filipinos.

Jorge Solis is the brother of IBF light flyweight champion Ulises Solis. His loss to Pacquiao was his first in 35 fights. (SE)
