Robber takes advantage of Pacquiao fight phenomenon

An owner of a motorcycle shop was robbed Sunday as the robber took advantage of the situation when almost all of Metro Manila residents — policemen included — were glued watching ring icon Manny Pacquiao’s battle against Mexican Jorge Solis.

Josephine Distor told investigators at the Manila Police District in Sampaloc, Manila that the robber at gun-point took her wallet containing P7,000 in cash. She added that the robber took P17,000 from her Indian customer.

“Pambansang awit pa lang hinoldap na kami (We were held up during the singing of the national anthem),” Distor said.

Apart from the robbery in Sampaloc, the MPD reported “zero crime” in Manila.

Officers at the Pandacan and Ermita precincts reported no crime incidents while Pacquiao was slugging it out Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Police said that even detainees watched the fight on television mounted on officers’ desks.

“Nagpapahinga din ang mga criminal (Even criminals rest),” Station 10 officer Renato Dela Cruz said. Officer Lauro Antonio of Station 5 added: “Tahimik walang gulo kaya easy kami ngayon (It’s quiet so we can relax)”

Police, however, said that they expect the crime rate to spike up again after all the celebrations are over.

Pacquiao was able to stop the previously undefeated Solis in the 8th round of the 12-round fight. He decked the Mexican once in the 6th round and twice in the 8th.
