BATTLE-scarred veteran Gerpaul Valero gets a huge break after a shot at unbeaten World Boxing Association (WBA) Oceania super bantamweight champion Jason Moloney this Saturday at Melbourne Park in Victoria, Australia.
Though he is a huge underdog against the No. 14-ranked super bantamweight in the WBA, Valero hopes to do the unthinkable and actually score a victory over Moloney.
?He is well-prepared. I hope we will score an upset,? Valero?s coach Brix Flores told Sun.Star Cebu.
An upset isn?t impossible because Valero has already done it.
He destroyed fast-rising prospect Mhar Jhun Macahilig in the opening round of their meeting in 2012. He then walked away with a split decision win over former world champion Sonny Boy Jaro the following year.
Valero is an under-rated fighter. After a 1-13-3 start to his career, Valero is 20-4-1 since 2011. He is 21-17-4 with 15 knockouts.
Valero has been sparring with World Boxing Organization (WBO) No. 4-ranked super flyweight Rex Tso, Marco Demecillo, Adones Aguelo and Neil John Tabanao.
Valero is coming off a technical draw with Jason Tinampay two months ago.
Moloney is one of the most promising super bantamweight prospects in Australia. The 25-year-old is 9-0 with eight knockouts. He?s fresh from a unanimous decision win over Filipino Jeffrey Francisco.
Valero, along with Flores, left for Australia last night.
