Manny walks the extra mile

LOS ANGELES – The only problem with Manny Pacquiao’s training is that he doesn’t know when to stop.

“Ayaw huminto (He won’t stop),” said Pacquiao’s Filipino trainer and long-time friend Buboy Fernandez as the champ wrapped up his training at the Wild Card Gym.

“Palaging may negosasyon (There’s always a compromise),” added Fernandez of repeated demands from Pacquiao to walk the extra mile in training for his April 14 bout with Jorge Solis.

Oftentimes, over the last three weeks, Pacquiao would ask for an additional round either in sparring or shadow boxing, and some extra minutes on the punching bag or the skipping ropes.

“Kailangan talaga minsan hilahin na. (You have to rein him in sometimes),” added Fernandez, who’s been with Pacquiao when the latter was still a struggling boxer from the province.

Over seven weeks from Gen. Santos City to Los Angeles, Pacquiao has logged close to 150 rounds of sparring under the direct supervision of Justin Fortune, an Australian ex-heavyweight.

“Just watching him, I’m the one who’s getting tired,” said Rey Golingan, an old friend of Pacquiao’s from Gen. Santos City.

What was supposed to be a four-round sparring session against Mexican David Rodela Saturday was stretched to five when Pacquiao asked for an extra three minutes.

“One more, one more,” he told Fortune, who was about to take off the boxer’s headgear.

What Pacquiao wants, he gets.
