FILIPINO boxers bound for the last qualifying tournament for the 2016 Rio De Janeiro, Brazil Olympics are looking to reach their peak when they close their training in the Summer Capital.
Four top ranked Pinoy pugs are making the most of their high altitude preparations as they eye a ticket in the World Olympic Qualifying Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan this coming June 16-25.
Ian Clark Bautista, Mario Fernandez, Dennis Galvan, and Eumir Felix Marcial are poised to win in the last qualifying event for the upcoming Summer Olympics in August.
The line-up is looking to add more firepower as they train with light flyweight Rogen Ladon and lightweight Charly Suarez who already won a ticket to the Summer Games.
?We are optimistic with the other four who?s going to Azerbaijan. At the moment they are already displaying progress and perhaps we can add more delegates for the Philippines? boxing team for the Olympics,? boxing head coach for the Rio Olympics Nolito “Boy” Velasco told Sun.Star Baguio.
With the training camp in full gear, Velasco said the succeeding weeks will test the mettle of all boxers wanting to qualify for the Olympics with Nonito Donaire Sr. lending his services for the national squad.
?These four fighters have a chance to qualify for the Olympics. We pin our confidence that they will be able meet their expectations, thanks also to the help provided by Donaire Sr,? Velasco quipped.
Donaire Sr., trainer of the four-division world champion and son Nonito Jr., recently came to help the national team in its preparation for the final Olympic qualifying event.
Donaire Sr., now based in California, has joined the training camp since May 13, observing and giving the much needed schooling for the boxers.
Meanwhile, Velasco said Ladon and Suarez are up for a stiffer round of preparations as the Olympic nears.
?All of them are going to be trained harder as their respective competition nears.? Velasco, a long time national coach member to the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines added.
The two managed to earn a slot each after topping their respective weight divisions during an earlier qualifying tournament held in China earlier this year.
