1. Be a professional, don?t be fooled by lifelong politicos.
As a nationally-elected Senator, you need to represent all Filipinos, including OFWs. That means you get to examine whether policies advance our collective interest — both in the short-term and long-term. Don?t support anyone or approve any proposal simply because you have good relations with a politician.
2. You?ve earned our trust ? continue to earn it.
You got over 15 million votes for a reason. Aside from name recognition, you?ve earned the Filipinos? trust that you?ll be an honest and competent senator. Many will tempt you with money and political favors so they can advance their own agenda — not the country?s interest. Continue to earn our trust by serving your constituents to the best of your ability.
3. Keep the government in check.
Unfortunately, there are many corrupt and inept officials at national and local levels. The Philippine Senate?s responsibilities go beyond legislating. You?ll need to hold our officials and bureaucrats accountable by publicly showing bad practices through the media. Keep the pressure on bad actors. Use your large following to pressure officials into behaving properly.
4. Grow as a public servant.
You?re a boxing legend ? but a political novice. Filipino voters need you to acquire more knowledge about economics, international relations, governance and political philosophy. These will give you the tools to ensure your voice truly matters in the Senate. When stakeholders know that Sen. Manny Pacquiao understands the issues, they?ll listen to you ? and hopefully advance the national interest.
