Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez insisted he is ready to face fellow middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin after his destruction of Amir Khan.
The Mexican stopped his British adversary inside six rounds on Saturday night to defend his WBC world title, albeit at a catchweight of 155lb.
But Alvarez said he is ready to take on the WBA and IBF champion at the recognised limit of 160lb.
‘I’m not in this sport because I’m afraid,’ the 25-year-old said. ‘I’m not afraid of anyone, I’m willing to fight any time. I invited him in (to the ring) to prove I’m not afraid. We can fight for no belts, we can fight for honour and pride.
‘We talked a little bit before (fighting Khan) and are willing to make (Golovkin) an offer.
‘For me, there’s no (weight) issue. I’ll fight him at 160lbs, no problem.’
Harshly for Khan, by some distance the smaller fighter in the ring, only one of the three judges had him leading at the time of the stoppage.
Adailaide Byrd had him 48-47 ahead at the point of the stoppage, while Glenn Trowbridge and Glenn Feldman surprisingly had Alvarez respectively leading 49-46 and 48-47.
Asked about the scoring, Alvarez’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya said: ‘I had it even. I was worried.
‘(But weight) won’t be an issue (making a Golovkin-Alvarez fight).
‘Golovkin, where are you? We will call whoever deals with you. Make sure you answer your phone tomorrow.’
