Boxing great Manny Pacquiao made a sacred vow yesterday, assuring the Filipino people and the more than 15 million who voted him into office that he ?won?t let them down.?
Pacquiao, who is expected to be proclaimed soon by the Comelec, told the Bulletin that he will prove that those who showed confidence in him won?t end up regretful of their choice.
?I will show them that they made the right choice in voting for me?that their votes won?t be put to waste.?
While admitting that he is a newbie, Pacquiao, 37, insists that his clean intentions and his burning desire to alleviate the suffering of the poor and unfortunate will lead him to become an effective lawmaker.
?I didn?t enter public office to enrich myself like the ones who have made politics as their main occupation,? said Pacquiao.
?The poor people and the needy are the ones I will prioritize in extending help,? said Pacquiao, who built homes for his constituents in Sarangani using his ring earnings as funds to finance his many projects in one of the country?s poorest regions.
Pacquiao said he will work for free education, improve the life of teachers and farmers and lend his expertise in sports ? as a throwback to his old profession ? during his six-year Senate stint.
Pacquiao retired from the sport of boxing following his victory over Tim Bradley in Las Vegas last month so he could focus on his new role as a public servant.
