This was the very first thought that ran through my mind when this was proposed or suggested a few weeks ago, and boy is this classic Floyd Mayweather. Not content to just retire and get out of the spotlight, attention junkie Floyd just had to do something while Canelo Alvarez smashed Amir Khan and challenged Gennady Golovkin.
We heard all of the rumors of a potential Floyd/Danny Garcia bout- or even talk of a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, as Mayweather routinely keeps himself in the news with a hint of comeback talks he pretends not to like.
Please.
If he does comeback for fight #50 and a shot at history, it should be for a once-in-a-lifetime and truly epic encounter against GGG– especially if Golovkin gets a fight with Canelo this fall and destroys him (as I believe he would). Mayweather has already decided to trademark and license #TBE50, which very much means he has something up his sleeve. I believe its a card of the worst kind, and it needs to be pulled.
Isn’t it typical of Floyd to go after a loudmouth and ‘drama show’ (as GGG would say) in Conor McGregor after he’s suffered a defeat against Nate Diaz? Wouldn’t it have been a little more palatable for Floyd to have publicly mentioned fighting McGregor with gusto around the time that McGregor was calling him ‘a pu***’ and threatening to tear down his likeness inside of the MGM Grand? If this proposed event (which just may be an underlying reason why McGregor isn’t on the upcoming blockbuster UFC 200) “pops off” as they say in the streets, then it’ll be insulting to Boxing and MMA for a number of reasons if it doesn’t take place in an Octagon (and on McGregor’s terms) at brand new T-Mobile Arena.
The obvious is here with this one: both Floyd and Conor are unbelievably polarizing personalities who would make watching them on ESPN’s “Sportscenter” must-see TV. They are made for the camera – and each other – in the way their magnetic, cult-like personalities would mesh during the promotion.
But McGregor is someone that Floyd would have correctly dismissed not even a year ago, and the difference in talent and skill set – when it comes to strictly boxing – is absolutely ridiculous. Unless Floyd took the same risk that James Toney took in Boston in April 2010, then this doesn’t mean a damn thing. What Floyd did was see that McGregor prefers to stand up and fight, while also knowing that he has the audacity to believe he could beat Floyd in a standard boxing match.
He can’t. Floyd would slice him like a tomato and put him in a can, and everybody would know who (and what) Floyd had just fought. To ‘level the playing field’ (something Floyd cared so much about that lead to an avoidance of Pacquiao) – it would have to be an MMA fight; which means Floyd and Conor would spend roughly equal time working on disciplines they’re not familiar with.
But can you see Floyd doing this?
Over the last 2 years of his fistic life in the ring: Mayweather needed 24 life and death rounds to barely separate himself with a “B” fighter in Marcos Maidana, an all-time stinker with an injured Manny Pacquiao because he didn’t want to fight, and a terribly boring fight with an Andre Berto who wouldn’t have even qualified as a sparring partner for him if we’re being real.
The last two events being the most egregious, as he stole money from you the fan and laughed all the way to the bank. More than likely, he figures you’ll allow him to do it again- spoiled from his ability to manipulate your pedestrian bank account. And that’s what he would be doing if you allow this to happen, and all of this promotional banter is designed to test the public’s reception to this stupid fight.
In a perfect world, if Floyd came back for a 50th fight it would be in a rematch against Manny Pacquiao on free TV, say, immediately after the Superbowl. I still have the “FREEBOXING4ALL” t-shirt given to me by Al Haymon’s crew during the PBC card for Keith Thurman vs. Luis Collazo, and it amazes me how the richest sporting event in the world (the Superbowl) is still able to be shown and broadcast for free around the world. Its all owed to the huge number of sponsors connected to the event.
You think Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor couldn’t (or shouldn’t do that) if it happens? I know its wishful thinking, but its time that the public recognizes cash grabs for what they are, and prevents these type of gimmick proposals from gaining any traction at all.
For my “Money”, I want to see Floyd in there with a willing-to-drop-weight-to 154 lbs GGG for fight #50 or a rematch with Pacquiao. Anything other than that and #TBE50 is an absolute joke. Gee Floyd, what is Conor gonna have to weigh, 145 lbs? Will it be by MMA rules so there’s possibility for drama? Will Conor have to wear 16 ounce gloves for this thing, or will you wear the same gloves that Nate Diaz wore when he broke McGregor? You will, afterall, make sooooooo many more millions than Nate did for exposing him first mind you, so its only fair you assume the same risk!
