Las Vegas – Following Juan Manuel Marquez’s victory over Marco Antonio Barrera, Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, informed the media that HBO had given the green light for a rematch on September 15, which also marks Mexican Independence Day.
Juan Manuel Marquez was open to the rematch, but Barrera was not ready to leap into any commitments.
“I need to time to get my mind off of boxing and spend time with my family,” stated Barrera.
If a bout with Barrera is not possible, Marquez once again made it very clear that he looks forward to a rematch with Filipino Manny Pacquiao.
“I would like to fight Pacquiao,” said Marquez. “The result of our first fight is a major thorn in my side.”
Realistically, a fight with Pacquiao will not be possible until legal courts decide if Top Rank or Golden Boy owns the promotional rights to the Filipino star. If Top Rank comes out on top in the legal conflict, a Marquez v. Pacquiao bout is unlikely due to the feud between promotional firms.
