JORGE SOLIS has the key to beat Manny Pacquiao. The Mexican mystery fighter actually has it on video.
“Jorge Solis told me that he knows how to win this fight (against Pacquiao on April 14),” Top Rank publicist Ricardo Jimenez told the Bulletin.
“Solis believes Pacquiao’s fight with Juan Manuel Marquez (in May 2004 that ended on a 12-round split draw) provides lots of answers,” added Jimenez.
In that fight, Pacquiao floored Marquez thrice in the first round but could not put him away for good, allowing the master technician from Mexico City to salvage a draw by utilizing his non-pareil counterpunching skills.
“That’s the way to beat Pacquiao,” Jimenez quoted Solis as saying from his high-altitude training camp in the mountains of Otomi near the city of Toluca in Mexico.
Solis is the heavy underdog but the 27-year-old from Guadalajara who packs a 32-0 win-loss slate with 23 knockouts is confident of pulling off a major upset.
Ranked No. 2 by the World Boxing Council in the featherweight class, Solis, according to jaded followers of the fight game, is expected to provide little resistance to a superbly conditioned Pacquiao.
But will Pacquiao come into the fight in tip-top condition?
While he may be physically in Los Angeles, his mind might be in South Cotabato, where he is running for a Congress seat in the May 14 polls.
Despite everything, Pacquiao is so favored to win that a betting line hasn’t been posted on his bout with Solis.
