GERRY Pe?alosa’s own “Moment of Truth” will unfold today as the 34-year-old Cebuano fighter battles the bigger, meaner and younger Mexican champion Daniel Ponce De Leon for the WBO and IBA super bantamweight titles.
The fight will be under the Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Juan Manuel Marquez 12 round WBC super featherweight title bout at the MGM Grand Hotel and Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
The Philippines is still without a legitimate world champion, and Gerry, the youngest of the Pe?alosa fighting brothers, will try to deliver it following Z “The Dream” Gorres’ controversial defeat at home last Feb. 24.
It would be a tougher and a steeper mountain to climb as the 28-year old De Leon, who is still in his prime, seems too big and too powerful against the former WBC super flyweight king.
In yesterday’s official weigh in session—both De Leon (30-1, 28KOs) and Pe?alosa (51-5-2, 34KOs) tipped the scales at exactly 122 pounds.
Not one except his trainer Freddie Roach, who is also absent in today’s battle, believed that Pe?alosa could pull the rug from under De Leon.
Even the odds makers in Las Vegas had to pull out their betting lines on the De Leon-Pe?alosa tiff because the odds against Pe?alosa of winning the fight is so huge that it is bad for business.
This will be Pe?alosa’s fourth attempt to become a world champion once again after failing three times to regain his WBC super flyweight belt.
