I have yet to see the movie 300. From what I’ve read it’s based on the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. While they faced insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspired all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy.
Let me tell you readers something, Diego “Chico” Corrales would fit right in with those 300 warriors that fought so gallantly to the death. They might have been out-numbered and out-gunned but they were never out-willed. This is the first thing that came to my mind when I read about his upcoming battle with Joshua Clottey.
In my opinion, “The Hitter” from Ghana is one of the toughest, most underrated fighters in the game today. What reason would anyone have for fighting such a high-risk, low-reward fighter like Joshua?
Let me rephrase that, Who in their right mind would jump up two weight divisions to fight a guy that gave Antonio Margarito, supposedly the most feared guy in the division, all he could handle with a mangled hand? Nobody would, but then again maybe Chico isn’t in his right mind.
In the cotton candy society of today warriors are considered outcasts. They make decisions that people don’t understand. What they give to the world is overlooked and underappreciated. While Elton John can sing some weird song in front of a huge audience nearly bringing them to tears, a warrior like Diego Corrales can put his ass on the line time and time again only to be forgotten in the end.
