Filipino Jesse ?Little Giant? Espinas (13-2) pulled off a big upset when he stopped undefeated Thai KO artist Paipharob ?King of Knockout? Kokietgym (32-0 coming in) last night in Surin, Thailand.
Jesse?s win, at age 23, bodes well for the future of Pinoy boxing, but so does Jesse conqueror Christian ?Mr Pogi? Araneta (11-0) who waxed ?Little Giant? last year
With his stunning win, Espinas becomes the new WBO Oriental light flyweight title holder, and a rematch with Mr. Pogi seems in order.
Meanwhile, the 32 year old Kokietgym will need to assess things going forward. Curiously, one of his wins came against the much-traveled Rey Loreto; another against tough Henri Amol; and still another against streaking Rey Megrino who shocked the boxing world in 2012 by stopping Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (87-4-2) to win the WBC International flyweight title.
The thing is, when these guys meet, anything can happen and often does.
Case in Point: road warrior Sonny Boy Jaro?s shocking stoppage of Wonjongkam in 2012 to capture the WBC World flyweight title.
