PHOENIX ? The Arizona State Boxing & MMA Commission granted a promotional license Thursday to the digital network that plans to stage a pay-per-view show featuring Roy Jones Jr. against an undetermined opponent who would collect $100,000 if he beats the former world champion.
However, the Commission has yet to license Jones, according to Matthew Valenzuela, executive director of the state agency. The three-member board won?t act on Jones? license until URshowtv.com finds an opponent who is approved by the Commission for the proposed bout at Phoenix?s Celebrity Theatre on March 20.
Valenzuela expects to get a list of candidates hoping to face Jones, 47, who was considered the world?s best fighter when he won major titles at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight between 1993 and 2003.
?Now that we?ve granted the promotional license and approved the event, I think I?ll get that list pretty soon,?? Valenzuela said.
URshow.tv has been reviewing records and video from a large pool of applicants, according to Valenzuela. The Arizona Commission said it would approve only a fighter with a proven record. When news of the event surfaced a couple of weeks ago, there were reports that Jones would fight some ?random fan.??
The MMA fighters, Dan Severn and Ken Shamrock, were licensed at Thursday?s meeting, Valenzuela said.
