Broken Bollocks Jaw

There was more two-sided action and technique in Saturday?s bout than the insipid fight which made Fury famous?

There?s the indignity of losing a decision he thought he won, however mistakenly.

And then there?s the indignity of having suffered a broken jaw.

The debate rages whether Saturday?s fight between Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg was ?boring? or very boring, failing as it did to live up expectations. But cooler heads, who consider the boring/not boring option inadequate at best, tip their hat to the dignified loser.

Frampton broke Quigg?s jaw with an uppercut in the fourth round. A lesser man would have thrown in the towel, but not Scott Quigg.

?He caught me with an uppercut and has broken my jaw so that put a bit of a spanner in the works,? he told Sky Sports after the fight. ?I had to have round five off then just to see what the damage was like, if it was going to be painful when I got hit. Luckily it wasn?t, it was just numb. It felt like I had been to the dentist?s and had an injection.?

The thought of receiving a dentist?s injection is no more pleasant than the thought of absorbing an uppercut, but Quigg isn?t one to complain, about the decision or much of anything else.

While Frampton returned to Belfast to a well deserved hero?s welcome, Quigg was wheeled into an operating room to have his jaw repaired.

No sooner was he out of surgery than he tweeted a picture of his repaired jaw with the words, ?Very sore but a very successful operation?can?t thank you enough for all the support. I will be back soon.?

Among those who weighed in on the boring/very boring debate was Tyson Fury. The recently crowned heavyweight champion was ringside for the fight, but grew restless and left before it was over.

?Big fights nearly always let boxing fans down,? he wrote on Twitter. ?Frampton Quigg is a snooze fest through 9. Thousands of fans have paid a lot of money for this sh*t, get stuck in. Absolutely bollocks fight. Pleased I left and come home.?

It?s easy to dismiss Fury?s endless opining on subjects about which he knows little. But boxing is something he knows and knows well. He also knows, or should know, a thing or two about ?bollocks fights,? judging by his farcical match with Wladimir Klitschko.

Granted, it takes two to tango and Klitschko was too busy clutching to dance. But there was more two-sided action and technique in Saturday?s bout than the insipid fight which made Fury famous.
