Nicholas Walters risking unbeaten record with debut at 130 pounds

On Saturday night at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in upstate New York, former WBA (Super) featherweight champion Nicholas Walters of Jamaica will find out is he can dominate the 130 pound limit when he squares of with James Sosa in a non-title fight.

Walters (26-0-0, 21 KOs) will be facing James Sosa (18-1-3, 14 KOs) of Camden, New Jersey at the junior lightweight limit of 130 pounds, his first since losing his WBA super featherweight title on the scales against Miguel Marriaga. While he lost his title on the scales, Walters remains unbeaten in his pro career. But the 29-year-old Jamaican fighter is untested in the 130 pound limit and it could give Sosa an edge as he has been fighting and knocking down opponents in the junior lightweight limit. Walters seems confident he will beat Sosa on Saturday saying he had an excellent training camp in Panama. “As they say, 130 lbs. is his territory. I am willing to fight at whatever weight. I had an excellent training camp in Panama,” Walters said. “We are going to be OK. I hope he is ready because we are going to put on a good fight. Thanks to HBO and all the promoters. I want to make a big statement for 2016-we are ready,” he added. Walters’ popularity soared when he knocked down Nonito Donaire in the sixth round of their title fight at the StubHub Center last year in Carson, California last year. Walters is known for his punching power which was evident in his victory over Donaire as well as his ring generalship and mobility in the ring. Read more Sosa lost once in his pro career but that was five years ago when he was knocked out by Treysean Wiggins in 2010. Since his loss to Wiggins, Sosa is now riding on a 17-fight winning streak with 14 of those fights going by way of knockout. “Walters is coming in to my territory at 130 lbs. There is a big difference in this weight division compared to what he is used to. He will find out really quick what I am really all about,” Sosa said. The Walters-Sosa fight is the main undercard attraction in the Jennings-Ortiz heavyweight fight this weekend.
