CARSON, California?Roman Gonzalez has this aura of invincibility because of his dominant run in boxing’s lower weight classes.
He’s a champion at 105, 108 and currently at 112 pounds, in which some of his victims were the likes of Edgar Sosa, Akira Yaegashi, Francisco Rodriguez, Juan Francisco Estrada, Ramon Garcia-Hirales, Katsunari Takayama and Yutaka Niida.
Gonzalez will try and defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight crown against Fil-Hawaiian Brian Viloria today (RP time) at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
Though the odds are stacked against Viloria, Donnie Nietes actually believes that his fellow Filipino fighter has a chance of breaking Gonzalez’s shroud of invincibility.
“I think Viloria has a chance of knocking him out. Viloria has the punching power,” Nietes told Sun.Star Cebu.
Nietes is defending his World Boxing Organization (WBO) and lineal The Ring light flyweight belts against Juan “Pinky” Alejo also today but over here at the West Coast in Carson, California. (See above story).
“If he boxes Gonzalez and uses the ring he has a huge chance of beating him. But if he decides to go bell to bell with him then, he’ll surely lose,” said Nietes.
Nietes was Viloria’s sparring partner in preparation for this fight. They sparred at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.
Nietes said that Viloria is very well prepared and also in very good condition for what should be his biggest fight.
Viloria is 36-4 with 22 knockouts, while 43-0 with 37 knockouts.
