NEGRENSE pride and longest reigning Filipino champion Donnie Nietes is all set for his eighth defense of his World Boxing Organization (WBO) light-flyweight belt against Mexican titlist Juan ?Pinky? Alejo on October 17 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Murcia native Nietes (36-1-4 win-loss-draw, 21 KOs) will be fighting in the US for the first time and is looking forward to display an impressive performance against Alejo (23-3 win-loss, 13 KOs), and extend his reign in this weight division. A win will possibly earn him more fights in the United States.
This is a much-awaited moment for the 33-year-old Nietes who has dominated his weight class for more than seven years. Under the supervision of trainer Edmund Villamor, Nietes underwent a tough preparation for this match, just like his previous fights.
?The preparation is doing well. We have studied Alejo?s fights but we aren?t complacent about it. He?s also a good fighter and we should be ready,? Nietes said.
Also fighting in the undercard is former world champion Brian Viloria together with Pagara brothers, Jason and Albert, and undefeated featherweight prospect Mark Magsayo.
The boxing spectacular dubbed ?Pinoy Pride 33: Filipinos Contra Latinos? is presented by ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports. (HGD)
