Exclusive: Quigg still aims for Frampton, would settle for Donaire

WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg remains frustrated in his quest to nail down a fight with divisional arch-rival Carl Frampton and told WBN That he can?t wait around much longer.

The 26 year-old has been open with his desire to share the ring with the current IBF title holder in a massive unification clash, although negotiations have stalled on more than one occasion over the past few years.

Following his impressive two-round knockout win over Kiko Martinez in July, Quigg immediately turned his attention to Frampton but has now admitted that the fight may not come to fruition this year.

?It?s hard as I want Carl Frampton next,? Quigg exclusively told World Boxing News.

?We (Quigg and promoter Eddie Hearn) are just trying to make the biggest fights out there. There are some good kids coming through, but I want big names and big fights. It?s just about getting one of them sorted.

?It?s the part of the business that I concentrate on the training and the team around me are the ones trying to get the biggest fight out there, but if I could get the Frampton fight, that’s the one that ideally I?d like next.?

As Frampton is currently proving too elusive, Quigg is lining up an alternative route and has former pound for pound star Nonito Donaire in his sights after striking up talks over the past few weeks.

Quigg is aware that Donaire would be a solid name for his resume and hopes to secure the Filipino legend by the end of the year for what would be the Bury fighter?s seventh defence of his world championship.

?It’s a fight that we’ve been in talks about and we are just trying to iron out some small details. We believe that the fight could be made for December and It?s definitely a fight that I would like to have,? said Quigg.

?If the fight can?t be made for December, then maybe early next year, but as I said, the biggest priority is me fighting Frampton. If that fight can?t be made then it would be Nonito Donaire that I want to go after as you want to be in the ring and fight the best.

?At one point, Donaire was number two or three pound for pound in the world. You want to be in with them sort of fighters and I believe that if I get in the ring with him I’ll beat him.

?I want to test myself against the best and there is no doubt that Donaire is one of the best out there. I believe that I will beat him and that fight can be made.?

Donaire, 32, has suffered two defeats in the past two years that have meant his air of invincibility is no longer evident, although recent victories over William Prado, who Quigg stopped in three, and Anthony Settoul have rejuvenated his career.

?He may have come off second best against Guillermo Rigondeaux and Nicholas Walters, but he fought two quality fighters,? pointed out Quigg.

?I think the size played a big part in the Walters fight as Donaire is not a featherweight. Walters is a big featherweight and the power of Walters was too much.

?When he fought Rigondeaux he was out-boxed and strayed away from his game plan. But when he hit Rigondeaux and listened to what his corner told him to do – he put him down, so you can?t take too much from those performances.

?Those were his worst performances, but he was in with the very best. Anything lower than those two and Donaire has looked unstoppable. His last two opponents were very below-par, but he?s gone out there and looked a million dollars again.?
