Unbeaten Ukrainian boxer Viktor Portol is confident he will win against veteran Argentinian boxer Lucas Matthysse when they face each other in the ring at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on Oct. 3 for the vacant WBC Light Welterweight title.
It will be Postol’s first major title fight and if he is victorious, more lucrative fights will come his way in the 140 pounds limit including possible bouts with Adrien Broner, Ruslan Provodnikov, Lamont Peterson, Twerence Crawford and Jessie Vargas, among others. Postol’s trainer Freddie Roach says the 31-year-old unbeaten Ukrainian has a tough fight ahead but he is confident Postol will be victorious against Matthysse. “Postol doesn’t know it yet but he’s my new favorite fighter. He works very hard in the gym, does everything we ask and he can bring it. We can win this fight. It is a tough fight but I know we can win, and Postol knows we will win,” said Roach, who has guided Postol to his last three fights. Postol knows that the Argentinian is a tough opponent, having fought elite fighters in his weight limit but is confident he will win the fight. “I am about to face the strongest, most heavy handed fighter I have ever met in the ring. That is the reason I am at the Wild Card Gym with Freddie Roach,” said Postol. “This is my third fight with Freddie. When I first walked into the Wild Card, I was struck by the smallness of it all-then I walked around and saw the pictures of fighters and champions. These are the fighters Freddie turned into champions. I saw the blood and sweat on the two rings. I now know the history of the greatest place in the world to train,” he added. Matthysse (37-34-3, 34 KOs) is a veteran of 41 pro fights since turning pro in 2004. He has face elite fighters in his weight limit including a fight against Ruslan Provodnikov, Roberto Ortiz, John Molina, Jr, Danny Garc?a, Lamont Peterson, Zab Judah and Devon Alexander, among others. As Roach said, it’s going to be a tough fight for Postol but he has a fair chance of winning.
