A LOT of Mexicans have tried but nobody has succeeded in dethroning the best light flyweight in the world, Donnie Nietes.
Some of the finest Mexican warriors in one of boxing?s lightest weight classes–the likes of Moises Fuentes, Francisco Rodriguez, Ramon Garcia-Hirales–have attempted to beat one of the best Filipino boxers in recent history but each one of them failed.
Now, another Mexican fighter Juan Alejo will try to do what no other fighter from Mexico has ever done by actually defeating Nietes as he was picked to be the 33-year-old World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight king?s challenger for ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN?s first show in the US on Oct. 17 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
?We wanted someone from the top 10 and he?s rated No. 7. He hasn?t lost since Dec. 2009 so this should be an interesting fight,? ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu.
Alejo dropped his first three fights as a pro before going into a 21-fight winning romp that earned him his lofty rankings in the WBO light flyweight division.
He has fought some notable names like former world title contenders Joshua Cabrera and Erik Ramirez, who fought but lost to Nietes. Alejo is 21-3 with 13 knockouts.
?He is a typical Mexican who comes to fight. He should give Donnie a good fight. He has not lost in five years so he must have some pride,? said Aldeguer.
Nietes is coming off an impressive unanimous decision over Rodriguez, a former world champion, in Cebu City. Promising unbeaten prospect Albert Pagara is fighting in the main supporting bout of Pinoy Pride 33 – ?Filipinos contra Latinos? for the vacant WBO International super bantamweight belt, while his older brother Jason Pagara is slated in the undercard in a eight-round non-title fight.
Undefeated Mark Magsayo is also in the undercard and will be defending his International Boxing Federation (IBF) Youth featherweight strap. The opponents of the Pagara brothers and Magsayo are being finalized along with the rest of the undercard that will feature fights between Filipinos and Latinos.
