Long-reigning Filipino world champion Donnie Nietes will defend his World Boxing Organization light-flyweight crown for the eighth time on Oct. 17 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, and one of the names being looked at as challenger is Juan Alejo of Mexico. Michael Aldeguer, who runs ALA Boxing, told Fightnews yesterday afternoon that whether Nietes (36-1-4 with 21 KOs) will face Alejo (21-3 with 13 KOs) will be known in the next few days.
Dubbed ?Filipinos Contra Latinos,? the show will also feature fast-rising super-bantam Prince Albert Pagara and his elder brother Jason and featherweight hotshot Mark Magsayo. Aldeguer said that if Alejo won?t be available, Nietes will pick on another Hispanic fighter on the list, probably heavy-handed Nicaraguan Felix Alvarado (20-2 with 17 KOs) or some other Hispanic puncher in the ratings.
Nietes, who has made it a habit to repulse every Mexican challenger thrown at him, is coming off a rousing victory over Mexican Francisco Rodriguez and is raring to return to action. Most of the Mexicans in the top 15 of the WBO have been beaten by Nietes.
