This past spring, tickets for Floyd Mayweather’s bout against Manny Pacquiao sold out in less than 60 seconds. The same cannot be said for Mayweather’s final fight against Andre Berto on Saturday, which will be held at the MGM Grand just like the Fight of the Century.
According to ESPN, as of Tuesday afternoon, there are more than 2,100 seats available on Ticketmaster.
Keep in mind the dramatic difference in ticket prices. Ticketmaster lists the price range for tickets to Saturday’s fight at $150-$1,500 before fees. According to The Los Angeles Times, public tickets for the Fight of Century were priced between $1,500 and $10,000.
As for the secondary market, let’s just say prices exploded for the Fight of the Century. According to ESPN, which cites StubHub spokesman Glenn Lehrman, the average price for tickets purchased on the website for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao was $5,095. For Mayweather vs. Berto, that number drops to $799.
So, what does all of this mean? For starters, folks probably aren’t as excited for Berto as they were for Pacquiao, who was seen as Mayweather’s biggest challenger.
And, perhaps, people don’t believe Mayweather when he says Saturday’s fight will be his last. Though Mayweather has said that there’s nothing left for him to accomplish by continuing his career past Saturday, win No. 50 would be a lavish reward for stepping back inside the ring one more time, assuming he manages to get past Berto.
“This is 100 percent his last fight,” Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN.com on Tuesday.
