WBA (Super), IBO & interim WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin could emerge as the new pay-per-view attraction following his record-breaking ticket pre-sale at the Madison Square Garden leading up to his fight against David Lemieux on Oct. 17.
Madison Square Garden (MSG), New York’s most popular boxing venue has reported a record-breaking ticket pre-sale of the Golovkin-Lemieux fight scheduled for Oct. 17. According to MSG, the upcoming Golovkin-Lemieux unification fight has broken pre-sale record at the MSG with 6,000 tickets sold before the official selling date. ?This record-breaking pre-sale only confirms that this fight will be one of the most exciting of the year as the best meets the best for middleweight supremacy,? said Oscar De La Hoya, chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Lemieux?s promoter. ?Fans are thirsty for action and they know that is what David Lemieux and Gennady Golovkin will deliver on Oct. 17 at Madison Square Garden,? he added. Aside from what appears to be a standing room only fight night on Oct. 17, the Golovkin-Lemieux fight could also become a huge pay-er-view (PPV) success for the Kazakh boxer. Golovkin’s phenomenal rise to stardom could have something to do with his enviable career record aside from his being an ex-Olympian. Golovkin is unbeaten in 33 pro fights and what is amazing about his seamless record is the fact that he has knocked out 30 of his 33 opponents since turning pro in 2006. It will be Golovkin’s first foray on PPV and it would be a big step for the unbeaten champ according to his promoter Tom Loeffler. Pay-per-view “is a big step,” Loeffler said. “It opens up a whole different door for us to make these types of offers to get fighters in the ring with him. HBO is very confident in the success of this event, and the Garden made it clear with the deal they put together, they wanted this fight. This is really where Gennady launched his career, in New York, in the world’s most famous arena. And for him to come back now after being more than a year away, it’s very exciting for everyone involved,” he added. A win by Golovkin against Lemieux could open vast opportunities for Kazakhstan’s rising star for more lucrative fights that are of PPV caliber including a possible clash with the winner of Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez fight.
