BIG THINGS are in store for Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and Z Gorres should they stave off their respective foreign foes in a mega-buck promotion being put up by the partnership of ALA Boxing Club and Oscar De La Hoya?s Golden Boy Promotions on Feb. 24 in Cebu.
“These two boys are the future of Philippine boxing,” said Sammy ?Penrex King? Gello-ani, the right-hand man of Cebu promoter Tony Aldeguer, when he graced the weekly PSA Forum yesterday.
“Manny Pacquiao?s popularity no doubt is helping enhance the image of boxing in the country.”
Both under contract with GBP, Bautista and Gorres collide with Colombian Feider Viloria and Mexican Fernando Montiel, respectively, at the Cebu City Sports Complex, where a huge crowd is expected to gather.
More than a shot at the World Boxing Organization Intercontinental super-bantamweight crown, Bautista is eyeing a shot at the undercard of the May 5 super fight between De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas, said the hard-hitting Bohole?o?s chief handler, Michael Aldeguer.
The same is true with Gorres, who vies for the WBO super-fly title of Montiel. In the other title fight, Jimrex Jaca faces Indonesian Simon Butar-Butar of Indonesia for the latter?s WBO Asia-Pacific super-feather belt.
Six other bouts are on tap, including an eight-round tiff between the rising super-fly AJ Banal, who squares off with Thai Komrith 3K Battery and the professional debut of Juan Martin Elorde, a grandson of the late Flash Elorde.
If successful, the proposed Boxing World Cup between the Philippines and Mexico will take place sometime in August this year, according to Gelloani, who was also joined in the forum by top trainer Edito ?Ala? Villamor.
