You didn?t think Floyd Mayweather wouldn?t find a time to jab back at Ronda Rousey, if given the opportunity, did you?
Mayweather, widely considered the most popular ? and controversial ? fighter in the world, took a jab at Rousey, MMA?s franchise fighter, during an ESPN interview Thursday. This follows Rousey?s dig at Mayweather about his history of domestic violence at the ESPYs last month, where she beat him out for Fighter of the Year.
Mayweather, on the network promoting his fight against Andre Berto, was complimentary of Rousey but when pressed, he couldn?t resist getting a shot in.
?I?ve yet to see any MMA fighter, or other boxer, make over $300 million in 36 minutes,? Mayweather said. ?When she can do that, then call me.?
Before throwing out the ?Money? card, however, Mayweather had some nice things to say about Rousey.
?A while back I didn?t know who Ronda Rousey was, so I?m pretty sure she got upset,? Mayweather said in the interview. ?I want to say congratulations to Ronda Rousey and the UFC. You guys have done a tremendous job and I?ve won probably six or seven ESPYs for Fighter of the Year. And I truly believe she deserves it. Congratulations to Ronda Rousey.?
At that July 15 ESPY event, an annoyed Rousey said she was upset that Mayweather didn?t know she existed and waited for a year to get her shot in at the ?Money? man.
?I know for damn sure that he knew who I was, because he was running against me for Best Fighter that year and he has signed MMA fighters,? Rousey told reporters in July at a Los Angeles media day.
?So his feigned ignorance was meant to be a snarky remark to me.?
Mayweather and Rousey are the most famous ? and widely considered the most dominant ? athletes in their respective sports. Mayweather ? who said he is retiring (again) after the Berto fight on Sept. 12 ? is 48-0 (26 KOs) after beating Manny Pacquiao in May in the biggest pay-per-view fight ever.
As for Rousey, she is 12-0 in MMA, including a 34-second knockout win over Bethe Correia at UFC 190 on Aug. 1.
