Oscar De La Hoya has one foot on the top rung of the ladder leading to a place in the opposite corner for what may be Floyd Mayweather?s last hurrah.
Whether he takes the final step into the Las Vegas ring depends upon whether the Golden Boy believes that as a 42-year-old man now he still has what it takes for a mega-millions fight against the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
The longer Mayweather tarries over naming his next opponent, the closer De La Hoya edges towards that dangerous date with destiny.
Last week he said: ?I?m never coming back.?
On Monday he said; ?I?m very serious about a possible return to the ring.?
Then he added: ?But it will have to be against the very best. The best against the best is what boxing has to be all about. That, not the money, is what would make it worthwhile for me.?
And we all know who is the best.
