Bautista eyes slot in De La Hoya show

Rising boxing star Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista will be featured in the undercard of the megabuck May 5 duel between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas. But this rare chance depends on the result of his coming fight with Colombian Feider Viloria.

Bautista must beat Viloria when they clash on Feb. 24 in Cebu.

“I have to win big (against Viloria),” said Bautista yesterday morning after a roadwork at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

Michael Aldeguer, who is Bautista?s manager, confirmed that Bautista will see action on the De La Hoya headliner but should first take care of Viloria.

“Boom Boom is already scheduled to take on Argentine Sergio Medina,” said Aldeguer, whose father, Cebu boxing patron Tony Aldeguer, constantly guide Bautista and other fighters under the Aldeguer banner.

“They?re doing good in their training,” said Edito ?Ala? Villamor, who spent four weeks with Bautista and super-flyweight Z Gorres at the Wild Card in Hollywood.

They returned to the country over the weekend.

Gorres, meanwhile, will have his hands full against Fernando Montiel of Mexico, whose claim to fame was that he is being blamed for the death of Pedro Alcazar of Panama.

Alcazar slipped into a coma a day after his knockout loss to Montiel and died days later.

“He?s (Gorres) got a tough assignment,” said Aldeguer.

Aldequer, however, is confident that Gorres can pull off the win due to his ring savvy and the crowd support.

Providing morale boost in their respective drives will be the arrival of Freddie Roach on Feb. 17 from Los Angeles.
