Op-Ed: Why Cotto-Alvarez bout could be this year’s biggest boxing event

After his fourth round knockout victory against Australian Daniel Geale at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York last weekend, Puerto Rican boxing star Miguel Cotto is now ready for another big fight against Mexican idol Canelo Alvarez.

No date as been set yet for the potential blockbuster fight but Alvarez’s promoter Oscar de la Hoya is meeting with the stakeholders next week to hammer out a deal for what appears to be this year’s biggest boxing event. De la Hoya, who was ringside during the Cotto-Geale fight at the Barclays Center, said fans do not have to spend so much money to see an action-packed fight. “The biggest fight now to be made in boxing is Miguel Cotto vs Canelo so I I’m really looking forward to that,” said De La Hoya, who heads the Golden Boy Promotions. “The best thing about this fight being made with Miguel Cotto and Canelo is that people are not going to pay a $100,” de la Hoya said. “The beauty about this event taking place later this year with Canelo-Cotto?and I am very optimistic it can happen?is that the fans are guaranteed action,” de la Hoya added. De la Hoya has a good reason to be optimistic about the potential fight because Alvarez and Cotto are used to action-packed fights, which is what most fans want to see. The Cotto-Alvarez fight could eclipse the scheduled Sept.12 fight of Floyd Mayweather, who is coming off a unanimous decision win against Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao last May 2. Depending on who will Mayweather fight on Sept.12, fans will not spend money to see a less entertaining and boring fight especially if they are asked to pay $100 on pay-per-view. But Mayweather is a promotions and marketing wizard and he will surely come up with a sales pitch to promote his upcoming fight. Still, Mayweather will find it hard to beat the Cotto-Alvarez bout in terms of PPV buys, as both fighters have their well-entrenched fan base to support the revenue targets that they have in mind.
