The biggest fight of the last few years, Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather, Jr., still has one factor that has not been decided.
In a recent interview with the Grand Rapids Press, Floyd Mayweather, Sr. said that there is still no agreement for him to train De La Hoya for the May 5 in Las Vegas.
The key issue that has held up an agreement between De La Hoya and Mayweather is money. Mayweather Sr. is asking for $2 million dollars because the two fighters in the ring will be making ten-figure purses.
The aspect of Mayweather Sr. training De La Hoya to beat his son is creating almost as much interest as the fight itself. The trash talking and bad blood between the Mayweathers has been going on for a few years, and now father and son will battle for bragging rights.
Either Floyd Sr. will watch someone teach his son some respect by making him suffer his first loss, or Floyd Jr. beats his father’s star fighter. Only one wil get the last laugh.
Mayweather Sr. does not care about what people think with respect to him training a fighter to knockout his son. He just wants to earn his money.
“I’ve heard people say, ‘How can he train somebody to beat his son?’ This is just a sport. That’s all it is, just a sport,” Mayweather Sr. said. “Everybody can turn it into a big, old family feud if they want to, but my thing is, if I’m going to work this fight, I’m going to get my money, because there’s a lot of money out there, and I can’t get that money nowhere else in my life. And if it doesn’t happen, I’m not going to sweat it. In 45 minutes, it’ll all be over anyway.”
