Floyd Mayweather Senior has a counter offer for super-star pupil Oscar De La Hoya. The trainer has baulked at a US$500,000 offer to train De La Hoya to defeat his own son, Floyd Junior, in their May 5 super-fight in Las Vegas.
Mayweather told SecondsOut: “I’m not interested in no US$500,000 offer and I’m not into no US$500,000 with (a bonus) US$500,000 for when Oscar gets the victory. I asked for US$2 million because that’s what it will take for me to do this thing and US$500,000 plus another US$500,000 is just US$1 million. I said US$2 million and I meant US$2 million.”
However, Mayweather added: “If they offer me US$1 million for (services through) the camp and through the fight and then another US$1million when we get this thing accomplished then that’ll be another matter. That would be different.”
It seems incredible for a father to have put an exact price on his loyalties to his son, but that’s what we have here.
Mayweather said: “I’ve not spoken to my son for five, six years really. I’ve been by the house a few times but we’re not… we don’t talk. But he’s my son and I will only do this for a lot of money.”
The eccentric – but undoubtedly talented – trainer also said that he is absolutely convinced that Oscar will be able to defeat the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter in their WBC junior middleweight title fight.
“Oscar can win, will win, but only with me with him,” the trainer said. “But the size thing (Oscar is the bigger man) don’t mean shit. Floyd can beat a lot of bigger guys easy but I know exactly what Oscar has to do to beat Little Floyd. It sounds a (simple) plan but only I can teach Oscar how to do it. It is this – Little Floyd don’t have twelve full rounds in his hands.
“His fists hurt too bad if he throws too much. He can’t use his hands for 3 minutes a round without them swelling up. So, Oscar has got to put pressure on him so that Little Floyd has to use his hands too much so they bust up. Then Oscar has to go close the show.”
Mayweather Senior added: “It sounds easy, but Oscar has to make Floyd throw and then block those shots at the same time as getting through himself. Only I can get Oscar to do all that. Without me Oscar don’t have no plan to really win this thing.”
