It was touted as the biggest fight of the century on May 2. It was the super fight of Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. I followed a blog on the Saturday night because I wasn?t willing to pay the $100 pay-per-view price and after that saw the highlights of the match.
I would say I?m a fight fan and for the most part it was a fairly technical fight in my opinion. Mayweather did what he had to do, kept it defensive and didn?t allow Pacquiao to unload any big combinations on him. For a lot of people the fight was boring and it wasn?t the brawl a lot of people hoped for. It was a typical fight and not the fight of the century.
The fight aside, I think one of the most glaring details kept low-key, was Mayweather?s past of domestic abuse. In this day and age of high profile domestic abuse cases, like that of football star Ray Rice.
Rice was heavily disciplined by the NFL and let go from his team, the Baltimore Ravens, only because there was video evidence of him punching his wife. I think, if Rice weren?t caught on video, he would still be playing for the Ravens.
Mayweather recently served two months for a domestic abuse conviction and has been arrested a few times as well, but he hasn?t received that much scorn or ridicule for these actions by the sports world.
One of the reasons I think Mayweather hasn?t faced as much backlash for his domestic abuse is because he is the cash cow for a lot of people. Mayweather is the king of the pay-per-view event and he makes a profit for everyone involved.
I think Mayweather should be taken to task for what he?s done to women. He has to know that what he has done is wrong. I think Mayweather is in a state of denial about his violence against women. I think in his mind, he hasn?t done anything wrong.
Mayweather said he is only going to do one more fight and then call it a career. I hope a bigger swath of the media picks up on a story about his criminal past and that an organization like the Nevada Boxing Commisssion makes an example of him. I?m pretty sure they won?t because of the amount of money he makes in his fights. Most of the time when people should be held accountable for their actions, it?s often shrouded by a person?s fame and wealth. The bottom dollar shouldn?t be the reason why someone gets off on a crime.
I think Floyd Mayweather is one of the most talented boxers in the history of the sport, but his penchant for violence on women should be addressed. Mayweather should be shamed to the point where he makes changes in the way he lives his live. He should know it?s not okay to hit women and that to be a good person; he has to be good to others.
I don?t care how much money someone makes because if they aren?t a good person, all of that money is pointless.
