MEXICANS are close to being untouchables fighting in home soil in world title fights.
But ALA Gym head coach Edito Villamor believes that winning in Mexico is achievable because they have already done that in the past, not once but in three occasions, with longest reigning Filipino world champion Donnie Nietes.
So Milan Melindo is safe, if he follows Niete?s blue print.
?Milan has a huge chance of winning because of his skills and conditioning. He has to be impressive every round like what Donnie did. He has to control the fight every round,? Villamor told Sun.Star Cebu.
Melindo challenges International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight champion Javier Mendoza on May 30 in Yucatan, Mexico for his second crack at a world title.
Nietes defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) mini-flyweight crown in 2009 and 2010 with one-sided unanimous verdicts pver Manuel Vargas, Erik Ramirez and Mario Rodriguez.
The 27-year-old Melindo has been training for this fight away from home at Freddie Roach?s Wild Card Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, California.
Villamor believes that Melindo has benefited training in the US because of an array of different sparring partners. He has been sparring with the likes of Japanese Ryota Kihara, Aussie Andrew Maloney, American Carlos Licona and Filipino John Mark Apolinario.
?Yes, this his best shape ever,? said Villamor.
Melindo has fought for a world title in 2013. He challenged WBO and World Boxing Association (WBA) flyweight king Juan Francisco Estrada and lost by unanimous decision.
That loss has been a wake-up call for Melindo and has made him more hungry to win that coveted gold.
?He has doubled his focus and determination now compared to the Estrada fight because this is his last chance of winning a world title fight. He has also shown more dedication this time,? said Villamor.
