Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told Robert Morales of the Press Telegram, that he has a pretty good idea on who will be the trainer for De La Hoya’s bout with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Schaefer said that he was not at liberty to disclose the name until De La Hoya gave him the thumbs up.
“Just about any trainer in the world has either, through the media or through us, reached out to Oscar offering their services,” Schaefer said. “I have a pretty good idea on who it would be. But I’m really not at liberty to discuss or disclose it until such time as Oscar gives me the thumbs up.”
Earlier in the week, Debbie Caplan of Golden Boy Promotions told USA Today that De La Hoya was not searching for a trainer to replace Floyd Mayweather, Sr. for the upcoming May 5 showdown with his son. She also said that no discussions had taken place with any other trainer, except Floyd Sr.
In the last few days, Floyd Sr. has been pretty vocal in the media about his demand for a $2 million dollar paycheck to train De La Hoya to beat his son.
Schaefer felt that Floyd Sr’s demand was too high. He also said that Floyd Sr. might be throwing such a high number at them to try and get himself out of having to train De La Hoya for the fight with his son.
Based on Schaefer’s latest comments, it appears that De La Hoya may have already picked the person who will train him for the Mayweather fight. Several names have been mentioned to replace Floyd Sr. for the May date, including Freddie Roach and Jack Mosley. It could still very well be Floyd Sr. who will be announced as the trainer, but many on the inside doubt that De La Hoya will retain him for this fight.
An official announcement from De La Hoya is expected in a few days.
