Sergio Martinez: Manny is just breakfast for Floyd

Sergio Martinez has kept himself busy by acting as a part-time comic as he gives his body some time to heal from his badly injured knee. Whether or not that knee can ever get back into performance condition, enabling him to continue as a top flight fighter is doubtful, although I certainly wish him the best of luck on that front. In the meantime, Sergio also made an appearance on a local boxing radio show in Argentina, where he gave his thoughts on the upcoming mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

“This was never too much of a fight to me because Mayweather is in a league of his own,” said Martinez. “Floyd Mayweather can have Manny for breakfast, lunch or anything. Pacquiao is still a long way from being ready for Mayweather.”

This isn’t one of his comedy bits either, Sergio truly feels like Manny will not be able to cope with the class of Mayweather come fight night. But as far as his own career is concerned, he’s still in the wait-and-see phase, but any potential future in boxing is not looking good.

“I take it in stride. I am still having trouble walking. When my knee warms up, I start to hobble. I still have to go back to Spain and get a check-up by the doctors and by the end of March, I will make a decision about my future. I still have to see whether I truly have the desire to go back to boxing, as well,” said “Maravilla,” who spent a considerable amount of time after the Cotto loss pondering retirement while doing some heavy soul-searching with the help of a psychologist back home.

Martinez just turned 40 a few days ago and if he’s still having trouble walking now, and he needs to get that knee warmed up just to be able to hobble, than I think that’s pretty telling as to where he is in his career as a professional athlete – at the end of the line. Considering Sergio’s late foray into boxing and what he was able to achieve, I’m not sure there’s any real reason (except money) for him to truly try to make another go of this boxing thing. He’s already highly accomplished and certainly can make a career off of his name, particularly in Argentina. Regardless of what the doctors tell him in his upcoming appointment, I hope he acknowledges that the days past are just that…
