There’s a long history between boxing trainers Freddie Roach and Floyd Mayweather Sr. It’s been pretty routine that when the two men go up against each other corner Vs. corner, that the verbal jabbing follows. Recently the two went at it again, only this time they probably crossed the line.
Most boxing fans know that Freddie Roach lives with Parkinson’s Disease. This causes him to tremble, and it creates a slurred speech in his voice. On the flip side there are times when it’s also difficult to understand Floyd Mayweather Sr when he speaks. Truthfully, I’m not sure if it’s because he’s “punchy” after a fighting career, or if it’s another reason. That being said, both men have some issues when it comes to speaking clearly. Neither guy should take shots at how the other one talks. It’s taking it below the belt, and it’s unprofessional.
I remember when Roach was in China and Pacquiao’s former conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, made fun of Roach by making fun of his speech and mocking how Roach trembles. It was a low blow that should never have happened. It pissed off Roach so badly that he went after Ariza, at which time Ariza kicked Roach in the chest. This was probably one of the lowest things I’ve seen in the sport in a long time. Freddie Roach was visibly upset by Ariza’s taunting. and this is why Roach shouldn’t be making fun of anyone else either. If Roach doesn’t like when people mock his Parkinson’s Disease, then he doesn’t need to be taking shots at Floyd Mayweather Sr’s speech either. Truthfully, it just doesn’t belong in the sport of boxing.
Some might say that this is just a ploy by both sides to sell tickets. Well I ask, does this fight really need any help selling tickets?? Yea, you guessed it, no it doesn’t. This fight sells itself, and it doesn’t require any antics from the corners. Floyd Mayweather Jr. does a fine job promoting his fights. Manny Pacquiao has no trouble getting his fans out to his fights, so we don’t need the Freddie Roach Vs. Floyd Mayweather Sr side show.
